An investigating magistrate and prosecutor have ordered the pretrial detention of the confessed killer in last Wednesday’s fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old in Kallithea, a suburb of Athens.
The two judicial officials also ordered two other defendants to be remanded in custody. The pair had attempted to convince the court that they had no involvement in the deadly incident, but were nevertheless ordered to remain in jail pending trial.
The remaining defendants were released under restrictive conditions.
According to reports, a friend of the victim told investigators that he took part in the confrontation and identified the 18-year-old confessed attacker as the person carrying the knife—not the victim, as the confessed killer had claimed during the preliminary investigation.
“I was shouting at the victim, who was chasing the attacker, telling him that the 18-year-old had a knife and to turn back. The victim caught up with him within about five meters. I couldn’t get there in time. I saw the victim collapse to the ground covered in blood, and I immediately started calling for help,” the witness is reported to have said.
