Toxicology Tests Ordered in Kalamata Femicide

Investigators are examining sedatives found in the family apartment as authorities seek to determine why the couple’s two children remained asleep during the fatal incident.

Greek authorities have ordered toxicology tests on the two children of a woman who was fatally stabbed by her husband in the southern city of Kalamata, as investigators examine sedative medication discovered in the family’s apartment.

The case has shocked the country after a 39-year-old mother of two was killed, allegedly by her 41-year-old husband, who has confessed to the crime and appeared before prosecutors on Monday.

Sedatives Found During Investigation

According to investigators, packages and blister packs of anti-anxiety and sedative medication were found inside the apartment and have been collected as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Authorities have also requested toxicology tests on the couple’s two children, aged 10 and 6, who were in the apartment at the time of the killing. The request is linked to reports that the children remained deeply asleep and did not wake despite an intense argument that allegedly preceded the attack.

The children spent the night in hospital under medical supervision and are receiving psychological support. Social services are assessing arrangements for their future care.

Conflicting Accounts

The victim suffered multiple stab wounds to her back, chest and neck, while injuries on her hands are believed to indicate an attempt to defend herself. A further forensic examination is expected to provide additional details about the circumstances of the killing.

The suspect reportedly told police that he awoke to find his wife standing over him with a knife and claimed he acted in self-defense. However, reports indicate that he sustained only minor abrasions and superficial injuries, with no knife wounds recorded.

Reports of Escalating Tensions

According to information gathered during the investigation, the couple had experienced increasing tensions in recent months. The victim had reportedly wanted to end the marriage for around a year, while neighbours said they frequently heard arguments and incidents suggesting verbal and physical conflict.

Despite these reports, no formal domestic violence complaint had been filed with police regarding the couple.
