A 2½-year-old boy was injured after falling from a first-floor balcony in Patras, western Greece, with a tree below helping to reduce the force of the fall.

The incident occurred Tuesday morning in the area of Paralia Patras, when the child was playing at his home.

At some point, the boy apparently moved out of his mother’s sight and managed to climb onto the balcony. It remains unclear how he reached it before falling from the first floor.

A tree directly below the balcony reduced the force of the fall. The child nevertheless suffered fractures and was taken to Karamandaneio Children Hospital in Patras.

Doctors were scheduled to perform an MRI on Wednesday to determine the extent of his fractures.

The boy’s mother was arrested on suspicion of exposing a minor to danger. She was later released on the order of a prosecutor.
