A Turkish citizen is under investigation on Chios for alleged involvement in an espionage case after being arrested in recent days by Coast Guard officers.
The 61-year-old was already the subject of an international manhunt under a Turkish red notice for robbery and had been under discreet surveillance by Greece’s National Intelligence Service (EYP).
During a search of the residence he was staying in near the Chios port pier, authorities discovered equipment considered suspicious for surveillance and potential espionage activity.
Items seized included binoculars, a telephoto lens, and five mobile phones. According to reports, officers also found contraband cigarettes.
The equipment has been sent to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to determine how and where it was used, while investigators are also examining the suspect’s contacts.
