The two 42-year-old defendants in the Marfin case have been ordered held in pre-trial detention.

The men were arrested last Friday under warrants issued by Athens’ 3rd investigating judge, based on evidence gathered by the Hellenic Police’s Homicide Division. A third warrant, tied to the same case, led to the arrest of a 46-year-old woman in London.

According to reports, both defendants denied any connection to the unrest outside the Marfin bank when questioned by the investigating judge. One of the two, whom the police investigation identifies as the person who smashed the building’s window, reportedly said he took part in the May 5, 2010 march but left once the disturbances began. The other reportedly said he was also at the march, but in a different location.

Reports indicate the investigating judge and prosecutor concluded that the specific nature of the acts attributed to the two defendants raised concerns they could commit further offenses, and therefore ordered them held pending trial.
