Two men arrested in connection with the deadly explosion and fire in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, are being brought before prosecutors as authorities continue their investigation into the industrial accident.
The suspects, escorted by officers from the Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Directorate, were transferred from police headquarters to the Athens courts as part of the expedited legal process.
The incident turned fatal after one of three victims who had suffered severe burns died while receiving treatment in intensive care. Two other people remain intubated in critical condition, while eight additional individuals were treated for respiratory problems.
The fire and the powerful explosion completely destroyed a heavy vehicle repair workshop, along with two neighboring businesses.
According to the Fire Service’s investigation, the blaze started during hot work involving oxygen-acetylene equipment. Investigators believe the fire quickly spread to a propane tanker truck, triggering the massive explosion.
Authorities have arrested the owner of the repair workshop and the operator of the tanker truck. Both face charges related to causing a fire and explosion with possible intent under Greek law.
