A two-year-old girl remains in critical condition in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Aglaia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital after falling into a fountain in Kallithea, a suburb of Athens.
Authorities and doctors have released new details about the accident, highlighting crucial minutes lost in locating the child. The fountain where she fell was partially obscured by a large screen and raised platform, delaying her parents’ ability to spot her immediately.
The girl underwent forty minutes of CPR by emergency responders before being stabilized and transported to the hospital. CT scans revealed no brain swelling, a cautiously optimistic sign given she had been without oxygen for nearly an hour. She also underwent an MRI to provide a clearer assessment of her condition.
Doctors noted that the low temperature of the water may have played a role in reducing potential damage, but they stress that the child remains in a critical and fragile state.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the parents were seated at a nearby café and momentarily distracted, allowing the toddler to slip away unnoticed. It took three to four minutes for the father to reach the fountain and find her unconscious, at which point bystanders provided first aid until emergency services arrived.
