The latest subject rankings released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds mark a record year for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, reflecting the institution’s strongest performance of the past five years.
In the 2026 QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Athens earned distinctions in 24 academic disciplines — a sharp rise from 15 in 2023 and 14 in 2021 — underscoring the institution’s rapid international ascent across research and teaching.
QS evaluates universities across five broad subject areas and 55 specialized disciplines. The University of Athens secured particularly notable gains in the humanities and health sciences, while also strengthening its presence in STEM and social sciences.

The university’s standout achievement came in Classics and Ancient History, which climbed to 34th place globally, advancing from the 51–100 range held in recent years. Three additional disciplines ranked within the global top 100: Dentistry, Archaeology, and Petroleum Engineering.
Life Sciences and Medicine emerged as the institution’s strongest broad academic category, rising to 195th worldwide, up 19 places since 2022. All four departments of the School of Health Sciences earned strong international placements, including Pharmacy & Pharmacology (101–150), Medicine (184th), and Nursing (151–225).
The Law faculty recorded one of the year’s biggest jumps, climbing 100 places to the 251–300 bracket globally.
Humanities disciplines posted the largest number of new entries, with Philosophy, Linguistics, Modern Languages, and English Language & Literature appearing in the rankings for the first time. The university also expanded its footprint in science and technology, earning distinctions in Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Environmental Sciences, and Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
Politics & International Studies entered the rankings for the first time, while Education, Psychology, Economics & Econometrics, and Agriculture & Forestry also maintained strong global positions.
