Specialized crews from the Attica Region’s Mosquito Control Department began spraying areas of Glyfada at 6 a.m. following a confirmed case of West Nile virus in the area.
The spraying operations are being carried out around Zamanou Street in Glyfada, as well as on Iras, Ermou and Ariadnis streets. Authorities emphasized that the measures are strictly preventive and are being implemented in close cooperation with the relevant health authorities and the Municipality of Glyfada.
At each location where spraying was completed, the crew immediately placed warning tape and informational notices marked “CAUTION,” asking pedestrians not to touch sprayed surfaces, including foliage and other objects within the designated areas.
Residents Informed About West Nile Case and Spraying Measures
The immediate response by authorities was decided following official notification from the National Public Health Organization (EODY) confirming a case of West Nile virus infection in the wider area.
For its part, the municipal administration moved quickly to clarify that there is absolutely no reason for residents to be concerned.
To ensure residents were informed in time, the municipality had already posted relevant notices on apartment building entrances the previous day, July 15, along the streets where the spraying crews were scheduled to operate. This allowed residents to take the necessary household safety measures, such as removing clothes from balconies and keeping pets indoors during the spraying process.
How the Virus Is Transmitted
Health authorities reminded the public that West Nile virus is mainly transmitted through the bite of infected “common” mosquitoes and is not transmitted from person to person under any circumstances.
At the same time, residents are being urged to remain cautious and take appropriate personal protection measures against mosquito bites in their private spaces.
