Wildfire Breaks Out In Zoniana, Crete

A firefighting helicopter is helping tackle the blaze, with the Mylopotamos municipality assisting with water tankers

A wildfire broke out Friday morning in an area of low vegetation in Zoniana, in the Mylopotamos region of Crete.

The fire started around 11:45 a.m., prompting a response from 21 firefighters, a ground crew unit from the 3rd Special Firefighting Force, and seven fire engines.

A helicopter is also taking part in the aerial firefighting effort, while the Municipality of Mylopotamos is assisting with water tanker trucks.

The area is currently under a high fire risk warning (danger category 3/5).

The Rethymno Arson Investigation Unit has been mobilized to determine the cause of the fire
