A 54-year-old woman arrested after 200 animals were found at her home in Thermi, near the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, has been released on a prosecutor’s order, authorities said Thursday.

The prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation to examine the animals’ living conditions and determine whether they meet legally required animal welfare standards. According to a statement from the Hellenic Police, the animals lacked comfortable, hygienic and suitable shelter, in violation of animal welfare regulations.

Police found 120 dogs, 70 cats and 10 goats at the woman’s residence.

The woman was arrested Wednesday afternoon following an incident involving a 35-year-old woman from Algeria, whom she allegedly threatened.

The investigation will now focus on the conditions in which the animals were being kept and whether animal welfare regulations were violated.
