Athens is set to turn red and white as hundreds of Santas take over the city centre for the Athens Santa Run 2025, a joyful celebration of sport, solidarity and Christmas spirit. The festive run will take place on Sunday, December 21, inviting residents and visitors alike to experience Athens in a uniquely cheerful way.

The event is organised by the Athens Culture, Sports and Youth Organisation (OPANDA) in collaboration with the Offline Running Association, Greece’s largest running club. The starting signal will be given at 10:00 a.m. by Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, marking the beginning of a day filled with movement, music and goodwill.

A Festive Route Through the Heart of Athens

Open to participants of all ages, the run features a 2.8-kilometre route that starts and finishes at Athens City Hall. Runners will pass through some of the city’s most iconic neighbourhoods, including Monastiraki, Thissio and Omonia, transforming central Athens into a moving sea of Santa Claus costumes.

Beyond the festive fun, the event carries a strong charitable dimension. Part of the proceeds will support the Athens Homeless and Solidarity Centre (KYADA), as well as OPANDA’s sports initiatives. All participants will receive a commemorative medal at the finish line.

Music, Christmas Market and a City in Celebration

From early morning, Kotzia Square will be buzzing with activity. Participants can collect their Santa suits and race numbers between 08:00 and 09:30, upon presenting proof of registration or valid ID. For added convenience, the underground car park at Kotzia Square will offer free parking for the first two hours, while the starting area is easily accessible by public transport via Omonia and Monastiraki metro stations.

Throughout the event, the Athens Christmas Market will be in full swing at Kotzia Square, allowing runners and visitors to combine the race with festive shopping, seasonal treats and family-friendly activities. The atmosphere will be enhanced by live music and hosting from Rock FM, with producers Alexandros Vrachoritis and Tasos Karatzis setting the pace at both the start and finish.

Adding a classical festive touch, the Athens Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra will also perform in Omonia Square, completing the holiday soundscape.

The Athens Santa Run 2025 promises more than just a run — it offers a shared moment of joy, generosity and Christmas magic, bringing the city together one step at a time.
