Greece’s men’s national water polo team has climbed to No. 2 in the latest World Aquatics world rankings following its gold medal victory at the World Cup in Sydney.
Head coach Thodoris Vlachos’ team earned 1,829.95 points after defeating Hungary in the tournament final, moving up two places and overtaking Spain. Greece now trails only Hungary, with just 7.8 points separating the two teams.
The second-place ranking further cements Greece’s status among the world’s elite after several years of consistently competing for medals at the sport’s biggest international events. In its four most recent major tournaments, the national team has won four medals: a silver at the 2025 World Cup, bronze medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore and the European Championships in Belgrade, and, in Sydney, the first gold medal in the team’s history at a major international competition.
By contrast, Greece’s women’s national team dropped one place in the world rankings after missing the World Cup Super Final. The team now sits fifth with 1,462.73 points. Spain remains at the top of the rankings, followed by the United States, the Netherlands, and Hungary.
