Greece’s women’s national water polo team has topped its group table after beating Italy 15-10 in the group stage on Saturday, securing a spot in the European Championship semi-finals.
Greece is aiming for a third consecutive major international title, seeking to further cement its status as the dominant force in women’s water polo.
The Greek ream faced its most demanding test in the tournament so far, at least on paper, facing Italy in Funchal, Portugal. The match proved one-sided, however, as the team coached by Haris Pavlidis delivered another commanding performance, claiming a 15–10 victory.
The win marked Greece’s fourth straight victory in the competition and left it with the tournament’s most prolific offense among the 16 participating teams.
With the result, Greece secured first place in Group E at the start of the second group phase and booked its place in the semifinals, where it will face the runner-up from Group F – either the Netherlands, the reigning European champions, or Hungary. Greece still has one remaining group match, against Croatia, scheduled for Sunday evening.
