Apostolos Angelis will be the first Greek athlete to compete at the Winter Olympic Games, taking part Tuesday in the grueling Cross-Country Skiing Men’s Sprint Classic.
The race marks Greece’s opening appearance at the Games, with Angelis competing in one of cross-country skiing’s most explosive and technically demanding events. The competition begins at 10:15 a.m. at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium in Val di Fiemme.
Angelis, a skier from the city of Ioannina, is the most experienced member of Greece’s delegation this year. He has represented Greece at four consecutive Winter Olympics—Sochi 2014, PyeongChang 2018, Beijing 2022 and now Milan-Cortina 2026—consistently competing at the highest international level.
The Men’s Sprint Classic combines speed, strategy and refined technique over short distances. The format starts with individual qualification runs, where athletes begin at 15-second intervals and the 30 fastest advance.
The quarterfinals feature five heats of six athletes, with the top two from each heat and the two fastest remaining competitors moving on. Two semifinal heats follow, leading to a final race where six skiers compete head-to-head for medals.
Greek public broadcaster ERT will air the event live on its sports channel. Angelis is also scheduled to compete later in the Games in the 10 km freestyle race.
Other Greek athletes are set to participate in upcoming events, including cross-country skiing and alpine skiing races over the following days, as Greece continues its presence at the Winter Olympics.
