New government data show a drop in job vacancies and unemployment, with full-time positions growing steadily. However, women’s participation in the workforce remains significantly lower than men’s, raising concerns about gender disparities in Greece’s labor market
The initiative mostly targets long-term unemployed individuals, unemployed women, middle-aged jobseekers aged 45–64, and those at risk of poverty.
By gender, the unemployment rate among women was 10.6%, compared with 11.8% a year earlier, while among men it fell to 6.1% from 8%.
The average annual jobless rate in Greece stood at 10.1% in 2024, down from 11.1% in 2023 and 12.4% in 2022.
However, compared to May 2025, the number increased by 13,319 people, representing a 1.8% rise.
ELSTAT reported that employment rose to 4,346,499 individuals, reflecting an increase of 86,787 people (2.0%) compared to May 2024.
Breaking down unemployment by gender for Q1 2025, the rate among men was 6.3%, while for women it stood at 10.8%
Nearly 200,000 long-term unemployed individuals in Greece, remain invisible in national and European statistics.
The initiative ensures 1,000 employment opportunities for people with disabilities, covering 75% of wages and social contributions.
Among individuals aged 15–24, the rate climbed to 25.2%, up from 22.7% in March 2024.
Despite the overall decline, unemployment remains higher among women and young people.
