Two north Dodecanese islands, Leros and Patmos, along with the greater Athens-Piraeus, face a long-term water shortage
According to official data from the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company (EYDAP), water reserves have plunged to 192.8 million cubic meters — 64% below the average level of 2010–2024.
The 80 houses in the submerged village, along with their church and primary school, were "sacrificed" to provide water for Athens.
