The Greek island of Ithaca, long overlooked by major tour operators, is expected to see a significant rise in visitors in 2027 following the blockbuster success of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has sparked renewed international interest in the legendary home of Odysseus.
According to a report by Britain’s The Sun, Ithaca offers a markedly different experience from its more crowded Ionian neighbors, with peaceful holidays centered on sprawling olive groves, secluded coves, and crystal-clear waters ideal for diving and relaxation.
The island’s capital, Vathy, Ithaca, is home to one of the world’s largest natural harbors and the Archaeological Museum of Ithaca, where visitors can explore artifacts dating back to the Roman era.
Those seeking a deeper cultural experience can also visit the Maritime and Folklore Museum, which has preserved the traditions of Old Ithaca since 1923.
The island is rich in archaeological landmarks, including Homer’s School, traditionally associated with the epic poet, and the ancient hilltop acropolis of Aetos. Tour operator Sunvil describes Ithaca as a destination that has “remained almost unchanged for centuries,” offering an authentic Greek island experience largely untouched by mass tourism.
Among its standout beaches is Gidaki Beach, known for its white pebbles and exceptionally clear waters. Accessible only by boat or on foot, it remains one of the island’s most unspoiled locations. Filiatro Beach provides a more convenient alternative, just minutes from Vathy by car, with sunbeds and a beach bar.
Ithaca also serves as a gateway to other Ionian islands. Travelers can easily visit Kefalonia, while seasonal ferry connections also make trips to Lefkada, Corfu, and Zakynthos possible.
