Greek Police (EL.AS) on Thursday announced 23 arrests and the seizure of tens of thousands of fireworks, flares and other pyrotechnic materials a day earlier in an extensive operation code-named “Spark-Down”. The operation came ahead of the Holy Saturday evening service that is traditionally accompanied by the firing of fireworks outside churches, chapels and public spaces.
A total of 3,660 inspections were carried out, resulting in 23 arrests and 22 violations. Among other things, the following items were identified and seized: 49,564 firecrackers, 41,447 fireworks, 6,370 novelty items (toy explosives), 152 flares, 127 improvised pyrotechnic devices, 114 signal flares, and 2,761 grams of raw combustible materials.
Injuries from the use of illegal fireworks are reportedly practically every year during Easter in the country, with fatalities having occurred as well.
