A young girl who was pulled unconscious from a public fountain in the Athens suburb of Kallithea remains intubated in critical condition in the intensive care unit of a children’s hospital, as new details emerge about the moments after she was found in the water on Sunday night.
A witness who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child described a chaotic scene, saying he stepped in to help when he heard shouting near the square where the incident happened. The man, who works at a nearby store, said he rushed outside and saw people running while carrying the child.
“At first I thought something positive had happened, then I saw them lay the child down and realized the situation was serious,” he said. He described widespread panic and said people around him were not reacting in an organized way.
The witness said he tried to give rescue breaths and CPR but initially faced resistance from the crowd. In the confusion, others told bystanders he was a doctor so he could provide first aid.
“I gave breaths and continued CPR. At some point the child started vomiting,” he said, adding that he turned the girl on her side. He also intervened when another person tried to shake the child, telling them to let him continue providing aid.
Police officers soon arrived, took over, and transported the child from the scene.
The girl remains hospitalized in critical condition as doctors continue to monitor her. Authorities have not released further details.
