Cyprus Heads to the Polls in Parliamentary Elections

The official proclamation ceremony for the newly elected MPs is scheduled to take place at midday on Monday, May 25, 2026.

A total of 569,182 Cypriot voters are heading to the polls on Sunday, May 24, to elect the 56 members of the House of Representatives who will serve the country over the next five years.

Voting is taking place at 1,217 polling stations across Cyprus and will continue until 6:00 p.m. In parallel, 13 overseas polling stations are operating abroad — five in Athens, three in Thessaloniki, four in London, and one in Brussels.

The parliamentary race features 752 candidates in total. Of these, 743 are running under the banners of more than 18 party alliances, while nine are standing as independents. Men account for 70.3% of the candidates, with women making up the remaining 29.7%.

Among the main political forces contesting the election are DISY (Democratic Rally), AKEL, ELAM (National Popular Front), DIKO (Democratic Party), ALMA, MEP Fidias Panayiotou’s Direct Democracy movement, Volt Cyprus, the Movement of United Cypriot Hunters, EDEK, DIPA (Democratic Alignment), and the Greens’ Movement – Citizens’ Cooperation.

“Abstention is not an option,” President Nikos Christodoulides declared after casting his vote at 10:15 a.m. at the First Primary School of Geroskipou, Polling Center C, in Paphos, accompanied by his wife.

Speaking after voting, the president stressed that “today’s electoral process is important and concerns us all.” He emphasized that the vote concerns “the legislative authority of our country,” adding that the executive branch seeks “a Parliament with which we can cooperate effectively, above all for the good of the country, society, and citizens.”

Christodoulides also called on the Cypriot public “to participate actively in the electoral process,” underscoring the importance of voter turnout.
