Cyprus Urges Emergency Preparedness Amid Heightened Security Concerns

Officials recommend an emergency “go-bag” should include basic necessities such as food, water, first-aid supplies and essential personal documents.

The Ministry of Interior of Cyprus is urging citizens to prepare an emergency “go-bag” as part of broader civil protection measures in the event of a hostile threat. The bag should be easy to carry and ready to grab at short notice if authorities issue evacuation or shelter instructions.

Officials recommend including basic necessities such as food, water, first-aid supplies and essential personal documents. The move is part of a wider preparedness campaign designed to ensure the public can respond quickly and effectively in a crisis.

How Emergency Alerts Will Work
In urban areas, any imminent or serious threat will be signaled by sirens sounding across affected districts. These sirens, operated by the Cyprus Civil Defense, serve as an immediate warning system designed to alert and mobilize the population.

Two distinct signals will be used:
• Alarm Activation: A fluctuating sound indicating a serious threat. Citizens are urged to remain calm, seek updates from official sources and take immediate protective measures.

• All-Clear Signal: A steady, continuous tone signaling that the immediate danger has passed. Authorities advise continued vigilance and monitoring of official updates.

Residents are urged to remain calm, rely only on verified updates from official media and government channels, and avoid spreading unconfirmed information. Travel should be limited to essential movement, especially if instructed to seek shelter.

Locating the Nearest Shelter
Civil Defense shelters provide short-term protection from explosions and debris until the immediate danger passes. Citizens should locate their nearest shelter in advance through the SafeCY app or the Civil Defense Operations Control Centre, and move there calmly if instructed, following all official guidance.

If relocation is required, residents should take identification, essential documents, some cash, water, non-perishable food, necessary medication, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, a portable radio and spare batteries.

If No Shelter Is Available
In areas without designated shelters, residents should remain indoors, away from windows and glass, keeping essentials such as water, dry food, medication, a flashlight and a first-aid kit nearby. If a siren sounds, individuals should lie face down and cover their heads; those outdoors should do the same, ideally in a ditch or hollow.

Special Plans for Sensitive Areas
For communities near British military bases and Paphos International Airport—including Pyla, Ormideia, Xylofagou, Xylotymbou, Timi, Anarita and Mandria—Civil Defense has prepared precautionary evacuation plans. Residents will be notified by local authorities about temporary protection sites, where Civil Defense personnel will be present to provide guidance and assistance.
