Israel has launched some of its heaviest bombardments in weeks on Gaza City, with tanks and warplanes striking eastern and northern districts overnight. Palestinian accounts describe continuous shelling and airstrikes, alongside orders for residents to evacuate westward.

The Israeli military confirmed artillery fire against Hamas fighters in the area. Witnesses told Reuters that multiple homes were hit, and warplanes carried out so-called “rings of fire” strikes, where several missiles land in concentrated areas.

One air raid killed six journalists, including prominent Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al Sharif, in a tent within the Al Shifa Hospital complex.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to fast-track plans for capturing Gaza City, calling it the “capital of Hamas terrorism.” He also hinted that parts of central Gaza’s coastline could be targeted next.

The escalation comes despite Netanyahu’s earlier indications that a new offensive would begin in weeks, not immediately. His government is facing growing pressure both internationally and at home. Foreign governments have urged Israel not to expand operations, while in Tel Aviv, more than 100,000 people joined a protest against continuing the war.

Netanyahu maintains the aim is to end the conflict “as soon as possible” by securing full control of Gaza City.
