Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to travel to Algeria on Wednesday as Italy seeks to stabilize its energy supply amid ongoing disruptions from Qatar.
The move comes after Iranian attacks on Qatar’s gas facilities forced a halt in deliveries, leaving Italy facing potential shortfalls. QatarEnergy confirmed last week that it would be unable to meet its April contractual obligations to Italian customer Edison.
Algeria, which already supplies around 30% of Italy’s annual gas needs, has become a key alternative following Italy’s reduction of Russian gas imports after Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Italian state-controlled companies, including Eni and Edison, are also in talks with suppliers in the U.S. and Azerbaijan to secure additional volumes.
Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said the government is actively supporting companies in their negotiations to ensure Italy can meet demand despite disruptions. Meloni previously met Algeria’s president in July 2025 in Rome, signing deals in energy and telecommunications, laying the groundwork for strengthened bilateral cooperation.
