William Stevenson, the former husband of former U.S. first lady Jill Biden, has been arrested and charged with the murder of his wife, authorities said on Tuesday.

Stevenson, 77, was taken into custody on Monday and faces a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Linda Stevenson, according to a grand jury indictment filed in the U.S. state of Delaware.

Police were called to the Stevensons’ home in New Castle County on 28 December 2025 following a report of a domestic dispute. Officers found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time, police said Linda Stevenson’s body was transferred to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science, where an autopsy was conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.

William Stevenson is being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 in cash bail, officials said.

Jill Biden, then known as Jill Tracy Jacobs, married William Stevenson in February 1970 while she was an 18-year-old student at the University of Delaware. The marriage lasted five years. She met Joe Biden, then a U.S. senator, in March 1975.
