Mark Carney will officially become Canada’s 24th prime minister on Friday morning, bringing an end to Justin Trudeau’s more than nine-year tenure in office.

According to Reuters, Governor General Mary Simon will preside over the swearing-in ceremony, which is scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. The ceremony will also include the inauguration of Carney’s new cabinet ministers, her office confirmed in a statement.

A New Era in Canadian Politics

Carney, a former central banker who previously served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, was elected leader of the Liberal Party of Canada on Sunday. He now steps into the role of prime minister at a challenging time for the country.

Canada is currently facing tensions with the United States under President Donald Trump, with an ongoing trade dispute straining relations between the two allies. Additionally, a general election looms on the horizon, adding to the political uncertainty.

A Slimmer Cabinet

Carney’s cabinet is expected to be significantly smaller than Trudeau’s. According to a Bloomberg report, the new government will consist of between 15 and 20 ministers, compared to the current 37-member cabinet under Trudeau. The reduction in ministerial positions signals a shift in governance style as Carney looks to streamline government operations.
