Rubio to Hold ‘Frank’ Talks With Pope Leo

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet Pope Leo at the Vatican for discussions expected to address Trump administration policies in what officials describe as an open and direct exchange

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will have a “frank conversation” with Pope Leo during a meeting at the Vatican on Thursday, focusing in part on policies of the Trump administration, according to the U.S. ambassador to the Holy See.

Speaking to journalists, Ambassador Brian Burch said the talks would take place in a spirit of dialogue and mutual engagement, noting that “nations have disagreements” that can be addressed through communication and cooperation.

“I think one of the ways that you work through those is… through fraternity and authentic dialogue,” Burch said.

He added that Rubio is approaching the meeting with that same intent.

“I think the Secretary is coming here in that spirit, to have a frank conversation about U.S. policy, to engage in dialogue,” he said.
