Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said on Wednesday that his country’s military effort to defend Saudi Arabia does not include an attack on Yemen and will be limited to defending the kingdom’s territory and borders, the spokesman for the Egyptian presidency announced.

On Monday, the Egyptian parliament postponed until October 26 the vote to authorize the armed forces to support Saudi Arabia if it requests help, lawmakers said, extending consultations on a possible deeper role for Egypt following recent attacks by Yemen’s Houthis.

Egypt would also defend the territory of any other Arab country if it received such a request, while its military effort would not extend beyond Egypt or another Arab state whose security and stability Cairo wished to protect, the statement said. Sisi added that Egypt’s support for the Gulf states is an extension of joint Arab national security.
