Thousands of U.S. Army paratroopers have begun arriving in the Middle East, marking a significant escalation in the American military presence as the war with Iran continues to intensify.

U.S. officials said troops from the 82nd Airborne Division, based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, are being deployed alongside additional forces already sent to the region. Their arrival follows the recent deployment of about 2,500 Marines, as well as increased numbers of sailors and Special Operations personnel.

The reinforcements are part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump’s administration to expand its military options in the conflict. While no decision has been made to send ground troops into Iran, officials said the buildup is intended to enhance readiness for potential future operations.

Expanding military options

The newly deployed forces include elements of the 82nd Airborne Division’s headquarters, logistics units, and a brigade combat team. Officials did not disclose their exact destination, but described the deployment as expected given the evolving situation.

The troop buildup could support a range of missions under consideration by U.S. planners. Among them is a possible operation to seize Kharg Island, a critical hub that handles about 90% of Iran’s oil exports. Such a move would be highly risky, as the island is within range of Iranian missiles and drones.

Other options reportedly discussed include deploying ground forces inside Iran to extract highly enriched uranium, a complex operation that could require sustained troop presence in hostile territory.

Another scenario involves securing safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route. While primarily a naval and air mission, it could also involve positioning troops along Iran’s coastline.

Rising stakes in the conflict

The troop deployment comes as the United States continues to ramp up military operations. Since the conflict began on February 28, U.S. forces have carried out strikes on more than 11,000 targets.

The human toll has also grown. More than 300 U.S. personnel have been injured, and 13 service members have been killed as part of the ongoing campaign.

Despite the escalation, Trump signaled that diplomatic efforts remain ongoing, saying the United States is in talks with what he described as a “more reasonable regime” in Tehran. At the same time, he reiterated warnings that Iran must reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face further attacks on its energy infrastructure.
