Onassis has never been a conventional heiress. Thrust into the global spotlight as a child and once dubbed “the richest girl in the world,” she has largely distanced herself from the business and institutional legacy of the Onassis family. While the name remains prominent through its shipping interests and the Onassis Foundation, she has never taken an active leadership role in the family’s affairs.
Her decision to reject a senior role at the Onassis Foundation at a young age, followed by the sale of Skorpios, the family’s iconic private island, reinforced her desire to forge her own path.
Instead, Onassis focused on equestrian sport, becoming a competitive show jumper and building a life around a passion that offered discipline and independence beyond the business world.
