Cold Front Sweeps Into Greece

Sunday will bring additional cooling, scattered rain or sleet, light snowfall in mountainous areas, and widespread frost, locally strong in northeastern Greece.

A sharp change in weather is expected across Greece over the next 24 hours, as cold polar air masses move south from Ukraine and the Black Sea region toward the country.

According to the meteorologist of the television channel Open, the polar air will travel south to southwest, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures and localized weather phenomena, including snowfall in some areas.

While the system is generally dry and not expected to produce severe conditions, it will absorb moisture as it passes over the Aegean Sea, allowing for rainfall and snow in mountainous and semi-mountainous regions.

For Friday, scattered and generally light rain is forecast. During the first half of the day, showers will affect the Ionian Islands and Crete. From the afternoon onward, rainfall will spread to southern Halkidiki, southeastern Thessaly, the Sporades, Evia, and parts of Central Macedonia. Temperatures will reach up to 18°C, while winds may blow at up to 7 Beaufort.

In Attica, skies will be increasingly cloudy, with local rain late at night. Temperatures will range from 6°C to 16°C, with winds at 4–5 Beaufort. Thessaloniki will see similar conditions, with temperatures between 3°C and 13°C.

Saturday, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, increased cloud cover with local rain or sleet is expected in eastern mainland areas, the northern Aegean islands, and Evia, along with light snowfall in higher elevations. Winds will strengthen, reaching up to 8 Beaufort in southern seas, while temperatures will fall further, with frost forming in central and northern mainland regions.
