This week’s severe weather system over much of Greece, Storm Erminio, brought a welcome blanket of snowfall in mostly mountainous regions of Epirus and Macedonia province – considered as an essential replenishment of water table and as a “shield” against summer water shortages in some regions.

The early Spring snowfall also favorable conditions at some ski slopes, such as the Parnassos resort in south-central Greece. The same storm system produced much heavier snow elsewhere in southern Europe, with up to 1.5 meters recorded in some regions, such as in Italy’s highlands.
Overall, ski conditions in the country this week were mixed and highly “late-season”.
Mountain resorts like the ones at Mt. Parnassos (Parnassus) and Kalavryta, further south, had received fresh snowfall in late March, helping maintain skiable terrain.
