The Athens State Orchestra, in collaboration with Megaron Concert Hall, will present its annual Easter Concert on Holy Wednesday, April 8, at 20:30, in the prestigious Christos Lambrakis Hall.
Held during Greece’s deeply symbolic Holy Week—the period leading up to Orthodox Easter—this much-anticipated event offers an evening where spiritual devotion meets the timeless struggle with mortality. The program brings together two masterpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries, guiding audiences through a profound emotional and philosophical journey.
Serving as a contemplative opening is Unfinished Symphony by Franz Schubert. Widely regarded as one of the most evocative works in the classical repertoire, the symphony stands as a model of spiritual purity and structural perfection—despite never being completed.
The program continues with Sinfonia da Requiem by Benjamin Britten. Written on the eve of World War II, this haunting composition intertwines humanity’s ancient fear of death with urgent anti-war undertones, creating a deeply moving and politically charged musical statement.
The evening concludes with Te Deum by Anton Bruckner. In this monumental work, Bruckner’s profound metaphysical reflections give rise to music that is both majestic and intensely emotional.
Four distinguished opera soloists with acclaimed international careers—Sofia Kyanidou, Mary-Ellen Nesi, Mario Zeffiri, and Petros Magoulas—join forces with two choirs and the orchestra. The performance will be conducted by the rising maestro Konstantinos Terzakis, marking his second collaboration with the orchestra following an impressive debut last year.
