Athens is set to celebrate Christmas Eve with warmth, light and a sense of togetherness as the Municipality of Athens invites residents and visitors to Kotzia Square for the “Night of Wishes,” a festive open-air event that turns the heart of the city into a living Christmas fairytale.

Beginning at 6:00 p.m., the square will host a spectacular moment as thousands of biodegradable lanterns are released into the Attic sky, carrying wishes for the new year. The glowing ritual, now a beloved holiday tradition, transforms the city skyline into a symbol of hope, solidarity and shared celebration.

“We are celebrating the most magical night of the year at Kotzia Square. On Christmas Eve, we will let thousands of lanterns light up the sky of Athens, sending a message of hope and solidarity, with our wishes travelling above the city,” said Athens Mayor Haris Doukas. “We are waiting for everyone to join us.”

A Festive Setting in the Heart of the City

This year’s “Night of Wishes” comes with an added festive dimension, as the square also hosts the Municipality’s Christmas Market for the first time. The enchanting setting brings together holiday lights, decorated wooden stalls and seasonal aromas, creating a welcoming space for families, couples and visitors of all ages.

Throughout the day, the city’s radio station, Athens 9.84, will set the mood with festive DJ sets, led by producer Nikos Lymperopoulos. In the evening, the station will continue with a live broadcast from the Music Corner of the Christmas Market, keeping the holiday spirit alive across the city.

The evening will be presented by Nicole Dimitrakopoulou and Panagiotis Bougiouris, guiding audiences through the celebrations.

Music, Lights and Christmas Magic

Adding to the fairytale atmosphere, an impressive carousel at the centre of the square will offer endless rides, while visitors can explore the market stalls for sweet and savoury treats, warm drinks and festive gift ideas. Every corner of Kotzia Square will be infused with music, light and Christmas cheer, making it an ideal stop for those spending Christmas Eve in the city.
