Opera meets cinema in a groundbreaking fusion with The Opera!, an extraordinary spectacle premiering at the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera on March 15 for two exclusive screenings. A bold reimagining of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, The Opera! is the result of the collaboration between visionary duo Davide Livermore and Paolo Gep Cucco.
Featuring an international cast, including tenors Erwin Schrott and Valentino Buzza, soprano Mariam Battistelli, and acclaimed actors Vincent Cassel, Fanny Ardant, and Rossy de Palma, the production is further elevated by opera legend Plácido Domingo, who both conducts and lends his artistic vision. Adding to the spectacle, stunning costumes by Dolce & Gabbana bring a layer of visual opulence to this cinematic masterpiece.
A Bold New Take on a Timeless Myth
The film follows Orpheus on his perilous journey to the underworld to reclaim his beloved Eurydice. On their wedding day, a tragic gunshot shatters their happiness, sending Eurydice’s soul into the depths of Hades. Determined and heartbroken, Orpheus embarks on an emotional odyssey, confronting love, loss, and fate through a dreamlike world shaped by surreal imagery and stirring musical compositions. Will love ultimately conquer death?
Livermore and Cucco, who have been working together for nearly 10 years, are now collaborating as filmmakers to introduce a groundbreaking form: the opera-musical. By blending classical arias with contemporary elements like rap and electronic music, they push the boundaries of tradition, crafting a bold and modern sonic experience.
Filmed in a virtual setting at the Prodea LED Studios in Turin, the production draws inspiration from the metaphysical art of de Chirico and the architectural brilliance of Nervi, crafting an otherworldly universe where reality and illusion intertwine.
As Livermore and Cucco state: “Opera can be contemporary, pop, modern—it can speak to our times.”
The film will be screened in two exclusive showings (7pm and 9:30pm) on March 15 at the Stavros Niarchos Hall of the Greek National Opera at the SNFCC.
