Holy Wednesday stands among the most solemn and contemplative days of Holy Week in the Orthodox Christian calendar, imbued with profound spiritual symbolism. Dedicated to repentance, forgiveness, and inner preparation, it invites the faithful to reflect deeply as they approach the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

At its core, the day is defined by two powerful and contrasting themes: repentance and betrayal. Through the sacred events it commemorates, Holy Wednesday signals the beginning of the climax of Christ’s Passion, just before the Last Supper and the Crucifixion.

Central to its message is the poignant story of the sinful woman who, filled with remorse, anointed Christ’s feet with myrrh. According to the Gospel, she entered the house of Simon the Pharisee carrying an alabaster jar of precious ointment. With tears, she washed His feet, dried them with her hair, and kissed them with reverence. Moved by her deep faith, Christ forgave her, offering a timeless message of compassion and redemption: “Your sins are forgiven.”

In stark contrast, the Church also recalls the betrayal of Judas Iscariot, who, driven by greed, turns away from God. This juxtaposition underscores the moral crossroads between spiritual awakening and moral downfall.

Liturgical Observances of Holy Wednesday
Churches remain open from early morning, welcoming the faithful to participate in the sacred services of the day. The Divine Liturgy and Vespers are held, while in the afternoon, the Sacrament of Holy Unction takes place. Later in the evening, the Orthros (Matins) of Holy Thursday is chanted.

During Vespers, a passage from the Gospel of John is read, while the hymnography also draws from the Gospel of Luke, creating a deeply spiritual and reflective atmosphere within the liturgy.

The Sacrament of Holy Unction
A central feature of Holy Wednesday is the Sacrament of Holy Unction, one of the most significant rites of the Orthodox Church. During the service, the priest reads seven Gospel passages and seven prayers, blesses oil, and anoints the faithful for the healing of both soul and body.

This blessed oil symbolizes divine grace and is used for the forgiveness of sins and the spiritual strengthening of believers.
