Queer (2024)
Fifty-six-year-old English actor Daniel Craig, best known for his iconic portrayal of secret agent James Bond, takes on a strikingly different role in his latest film, Queer. In this period romantic drama, Craig plays William Lee, an American immigrant and heroin addict living a solitary life in 1950s Mexico City. At the cusp of his late forties, Lee’s encounter with Eugene, an American expatriate and former soldier, makes him believe he could finally form a deep, meaningful connection with someone.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, celebrated for his Academy Award-winning film Call Me by Your Name and his most recent feature Challengers, Queer is adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985 unfinished autobiographical novel. Guadagnino described Queer as “the most gigantic gay film in history,” according to The Guardian.
However, the film has faced controversy, notably being banned in Turkey. The Kadıköy District Governorate of Istanbul prohibited its screening, citing “provocative content that could endanger public peace.” This decision led to the cancellation of MUBI’s 2024 Istanbul festival, which had planned to open with Queer. The streaming platform condemned the ban as “a direct restriction on art and freedom of expression.”
