K Group, the owner of Antenna Group, a leading international media, content and entertainment organization, on Monday announced the acquisition of 100% of GEDI Gruppo Editoriale S.p.A from Exor, including the newspaper La Repubblica, the radio brands Radio Deejay, Radio Capital, m2o, alongside HuffPost Italia, National Geographic Italia, Limes, and the advertising agency Manzoni.
The transaction does not include La Stampa, which – as GEDI recently announced – has been agreed to be sold to the SAE Group, together with its printing center and commercial network for local advertising sales. Simultaneously there is an agreement to dispose of Stardust, excluding it from the scope of the acquisition.
Antenna’s acquisition of GEDI will strengthen a leading Italy-based independent news and entertainment organization with broad international reach and global appeal.
Antenna Group will leverage its expertise in media, news, education, events, conferences and entertainment to strengthen GEDI’s portfolio of news and media brands, establishing GEDI as a powerful international media company with robust editorial independence. Maintaining the editorial independence of all acquired media outlets is always important to Antenna.
Preserving the identity, credibility, and pluralism of each brand is a core principle of Group’s strategy. In addition, Antenna plans to invest significant new capital to extend La Repubblica’s reach and showcase the award-winning work of the newspaper’s many talented journalists. At the same time, Antenna plans to expand GEDI’s radio business to create an important Mediterranean radio network hub and invest in news documentary production, streaming, podcasts, music production and publishing, education, and cinema – areas in which Antenna has a proven track record of successful investments.
Antenna is committed to investing in Italian journalism and bolstering Italy’s position as a leading provider of news and entertainment. The acquisition will enhance the consumer experience, integrate new technology and innovation, and expand audiences for GEDI’s news and content. It will also create several new opportunities for journalists to reach a larger international audience. Antenna will also grow existing content partnerships with HuffPost Italia, National Geographic Italia and others. Antenna is currently in discussions with strategic partners in the U.S. to add additional news and entertainment brands that compliment GEDI’s portfolio. Antenna will seek to partner with other local Italian groups and entrepreneurs on its Italian growth strategy.
Additionally, the acquisition will create opportunity to expand GEDI’s mymovies.it streaming platform and further integrate it with Antenna’s robust streaming platforms. Antenna will also explore expanding its theatrical cinema business in Italy given the company’s significant movie theater expertise. The GEDI portfolio will also allow Antenna to expand in music production and publishing, augmenting GEDI’s substantial radio assets. Furthermore, Antenna will leverage its relationships with global media powerhouses such as Netflix and other streaming companies to broaden distribution for GEDI’s news documentaries.
