Greece’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 8.1% in May, down from a downwardly revised 9.1% in April 2026, compared with the 9.5% initially reported. The March 2026 figure was also revised lower, to 10.1% from the previously announced 10.4%.

According to the latest Labour Force Survey released by the Greek Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) on Wednesday, July 1, the number of unemployed stood at 383,740 in May. This marked a decline of 29,643 people, or 7.2%, compared with May 2025, and a month-on-month decrease of 48,028 people, or 11.1%, from April 2026.

The unemployment rate among women rose to 11.7% from 10.6% a year earlier, while the rate for men fell to 5.0% from 7.2%. By age group, unemployment among people aged 15–24 dropped to 16.8% from 20.7% in May 2025, while the rate for those aged 25–74 eased to 7.6% from 8.0%.

Employment continued to edge higher, with the number of people in work reaching 4,353,357. That represents an increase of 20,712 people, or 0.5%, compared with May 2025, and a gain of 18,654 people, or 0.4%, from April 2026.

Meanwhile, the number of people under the age of 75 who were outside the labour force—those neither employed nor actively seeking work—stood at 2,979,634. This was down by 24,552 people, or 0.8%, from a year earlier, but up by 25,121 people, or 0.9%, compared with April 2026.
