The President of PASOK and leader of the Greek opposition, Nikos Androulakis, is in Brussels, where he participated in the pre-summit meeting of the European Socialists on Thursday morning of Dec. 19.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the PASOK leader held discussions with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa and the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez.

He also engaged with the President of the Party of European Socialists, Stefan Löfven, as well as the leader of the Socialist and Democrats group in the European Parliament, Iratxe García Pérez.

Following the meeting, in his statements, Androulakis highlighted that a new geopolitical environment is emerging after the recent election of Donald Trump in the U.S. and the rapid developments taking place in Syria. This is creating a new framework of multiple challenges, which Europe is called upon to address.

Androulakis stressed that due to this new situation “Swift initiatives must replace hesitation.” He further emphasized the necessity for Europe to take significant steps forward promoting a European army, the strengthening of a Unified Foreign Policy, and common defense programs.

Regarding Greece’s actions, the president of PASOK noted that “Greek diplomacy must also act immediately, in coordination with European efforts, to prevent a new dangerous scenario formulating such as the ‘Turkish-Libyan pact,’ but this time involving Syria.”

Finally, Androulakis underscored the urgency of collective action in the face of growing regional instability, emphasizing that “immediate solidarity and joint initiatives” are essential to addressing the evolving challenges.
