Greece’s foreign minister on Monday again revisited the issue of the Turkey-Libya maritime agreement – which Athens considers as illegal, baseless and invalid – repeating that it lacks any basis in international law.

George Gerapetritis was replying to a Parliament question tabled by an independent deputy who was previously elected with the ruling New Democracy (ND) party. He added that the MoU has no effect whatsoever on those who sign and ratify it, because it is contrary to international law in its essence.

The head of Greek diplomacy also reminded that he will travel to Libya in the near future to discuss issues related to maritime zones with that country’s leadership – those in the west and east.

“Greece is explicitly and over time in favor of a good unneighborly relationship with Libya, and our aim will be to find a delimitation solution that is based precisely and only on the international law of the sea,” he added.
