Former Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras recently met with the new US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, during a reception in Athens, according to a report by To Vima. The meeting, described as friendly and substantive, comes as Samaras’s blistering criticism of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has created turmoil within the ruling New Democracy party.
Sources said Samaras and Guilfoyle spoke at length during the event, which was also attended by four sitting cabinet members from President Donald Trump’s administration, visiting Athens for the P-TEC (Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation) Conference in Athens which wielded numerous high-level agreements on energy cooperation. Observers described the exchange as positive, even as Samaras’s political moves have unsettled his own party.
In an interview aired yesterday on Greek television, Samaras accused Mitsotakis of turning New Democracy into “a company-style operation” focused solely on staying in power. He said the government “looks only at numbers, not at people, policies, or ideas,” and criticized the prime minister for what he called “arrogance and institutional disrespect.”
Discussing Greece’s ties with Washington, Samaras praised President Trump as “a unique personality who operates outside conventional frameworks.” He lauded Trump’s focus on border security and energy, saying he “restored the importance of hydrocarbons,” and noted that he “reversed the disastrous woke agenda for the West.”
Samaras went further, saying he feels “a kinship in ideas” with parts of Trump’s platform: “At the level of ideas, it’s true that I share common ground on a number of issues. Take, for example, the woke agenda. On several of these matters, such as migration and energy, I have been speaking about them in Greece and in Europe since 2009.”
Samaras indicated he feels “a sense of national duty” and is weighing his next steps carefully. As was widely expected his remarks have fueled speculation about a potential new party within Greece’s right-wing ecosystem.
