Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (21-25 Sept.) in New York.
According to diplomatic sources, the two ministers discussed the latest developments in the wider Middle East, as well as prospects for de-escalation and stability in the region.
The same sources said Gerapetritis underscored the critical importance of dialogue and diplomacy in advancing peace and regional stability. He stressed the need for full respect for international law, placing particular emphasis on maritime security and freedom of navigation.
Greece maintains a channel of communication with Iran and has consistently supported the resolution of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy, the sources noted.
Gerapetritis also expressed Greece’s readiness to offer its good offices to help promote regional peace and security, as well as respect for the Law of the Sea as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), according to the sources.
