Greek Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, opened the New Year by underscoring the constitutional mission of the country’s armed forces amid a shifting geopolitical landscape. In his New Year address, Dendias described the military as a key stabilizing factor, defending national sovereignty while upholding democracy, peace, and international law.

“The Armed Forces are a core pillar of stability,” Dendias said. “Their presence supports society during natural disasters and other challenges, highlighting the connection between the military and the public as a main pillar of solidarity.”

Agenda 2030 and Modernization Efforts

Dendias highlighted the “Agenda 2030” initiative, which aims to modernize Greece’s military through structural reforms, innovation integration, defense industry support, and a strong investment in human resources.

He detailed a new legislative framework currently under discussion in Parliament that seeks to modernize career progression, salaries, military schools, service terms, and reserve forces. “The strength of the Armed Forces starts with their personnel. They are the multiplier of power,” Dendias emphasized.

Support for Military Families

A significant part of Dendias’ address focused on the welfare of military families. Planned initiatives include:

  • Construction of 10,454 new military housing units and maintenance of 7,030 existing homes.
  • Affordable housing for personnel transferred to less-desirable locations.
  • Childcare support, maternity benefits, and healthcare services.
  • Operation of a maternity clinic at the Athens Naval Hospital, with plans for another in Thessaloniki.
  • Free assisted reproduction and egg freezing for military staff.
  • Construction and renovation of nurseries and educational centers for children with special needs.
  • Development of student dormitories with scholarship opportunities.
  • Modernization of military hospitals and elimination of healthcare co-payments.
  • Establishment of a state-of-the-art Combat Trauma Training Center.
  • Creation of assisted living facilities for retirees and adults with disabilities.

Dendias stressed that supporting the “Military Family” is essential for the armed forces to fully accomplish their constitutional mission.

A Message to Service Members

Concluding his address, Dendias told military personnel: “The State and society recognize, support, and invest in you—your discipline, responsibility, and example. The Greek people trust that you will act rightly wherever you are needed. Continue in 2026 with dedication, guided by the principles and values that have long defined our Armed Forces.”
