Greek journalist Nikos Giannopoulos has broken his silence following an alleged physical assault by Greek Member of the European Parliament Nikos Pappas in Strasbourg, saying he is in good health but will not make any further public statements on the incident.
Shortly after the news of the attack became public, Giannopoulos posted a message on social media to reassure colleagues and the public that he was not injured. He thanked those who expressed support and said he would not give interviews or additional comments, adding that “the facts speak for themselves.”
MEP’s Statements
Pappas, a former professional basketball player and an elected MEP representing the left-wing SYRIZA party, has not appeared publicly since the incident. According to reports, he left France late on Wednesday and returned to Athens via Germany, a route some observers interpret as an attempt to avoid immediate legal consequences. These movements have not been officially confirmed.
Following the journalist’s statement, Nikos Pappas issued his own public response, presenting his version of events. The MEP did not deny that he assaulted Giannopoulos, acknowledging that his reaction was wrong. However, he stopped short of offering an apology.
In his statement, Pappas said that throughout his career—both as an athlete and as a politician—he has often been criticized by the media. He argued that judgments were made before his account was heard and claimed there were circumstances leading up to the incident that he chose not to describe publicly, citing respect for the journalist’s family.
While admitting that his reaction was inappropriate and that he should have acted differently, Pappas suggested that the full details would be presented to the authorities if necessary, noting that there were witnesses to the incident.
Political Fallout
The political fallout has been swift. SYRIZA’s leadership described the alleged behavior as unacceptable, removed Pappas from its delegation in the European Parliament and initiated procedures for his expulsion from the party. The Left group in the European Parliament also announced steps toward his permanent removal, stressing that it treats allegations of violence with utmost seriousness.
The incident triggered strong reactions across Greece’s political spectrum. Several opposition parties condemned violence against journalists, emphasizing that such acts undermine press freedom and democratic values. The government criticized SYRIZA for what it described as a delayed response, while senior political figures exchanged sharp accusations over responsibility and political culture.
Speaking to a television broadcaster, Giannopoulos later described the events leading up to the confrontation, alleging that Pappas deliberately tripped him and challenged him verbally before the situation escalated. The journalist said he never expected the encounter to turn violent and expressed concern about Pappas’ behavior.
