Israel’s ambassador to Greece has said that Hezbollah is acting in the interests of Iran, as he outlined Israel’s position on regional security, Lebanon, and shifting geopolitical alliances in the Middle East.
Speaking during a Policy Dialogue Series event in Athens, Ambassador Noam Katz presented Israel’s perspective on regional developments and the balance of power among neighboring states.
“Israel did not open a new front”
The ambassador focused heavily on the situation in Lebanon, rejecting the notion that Israel initiated recent hostilities in the area.
“The State of Israel did not open another front in Lebanon. It is Hezbollah that decided to serve the interests of the Iranian regime and launched a campaign against us,” he said.
He described Hezbollah as operating under Iranian influence, framing the group’s actions as part of a wider regional strategy linked to Tehran.
Lebanon’s internal challenges
Katz also pointed to what he described as the Lebanese government’s limited ability to control armed groups operating within its territory. He stressed the importance of border security and regional stability in that context.
He added that, in a “paradoxical situation,” both Israel and the official government of Lebanon share concerns about Hezbollah’s role, arguing that it serves external interests rather than national ones.
Regional alliances and security strategy
Beyond Lebanon, the ambassador highlighted broader regional dynamics, including energy cooperation and shifting alliances involving Gulf states and Iran.
He said these developments have direct implications for Israel’s security environment and regional balance.
According to Katz, Israel’s strategy increasingly relies on active diplomacy, cooperation with allies, and the use of technology and intelligence capabilities.
Concluding his remarks, he stressed adaptability as a key factor in Israel’s future stability, saying that the country’s security depends on maintaining strong regional relationships and responding effectively to changing geopolitical realities.
