French President Emmanuel Macron arrived at the Souda Bay airbase, near the west Crete city of Chania, on Monday afternoon after first visiting Cyprus.

After meeting with Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias at the 115th combat wing’s base, Macron is set to board a military helicopter that will ferry him to the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, the flagship of the French Navy, which is sailing off Chania.
The French president’s official aircraft was accompanied by two Hellenic Air Force F-16s in its flight west from Cyprus.
Significant military activity is currently underway in the wider eastern Mediterranean due to the Middle East conflict now under full swing.
Macron’s visit is considered particularly important considering the ongoing geopolitical developments and the need for a stronger European military presence in the region.
The meeting between Greek leadership and Macron punctuate the increasingly close military cooperation between Athens and Paris, along with the scope and mission of the military assets in the region.
