A pair of opinion polls were unveiled on Thursday evening that mostly confirm the recent trends of similar recent results, namely, a continued lead for a modestly gaining ruling New Democracy (ND), with Zoe Konstantopoulou’s party now aiming to consolidate second place.
Wide-spread dissatisfaction with both the government and the opposition is also a key result.
In a Metron Analysis poll presented on the prime-time Mega Channel newscast on Thursday evening, ND shows a 2.9%-point gain compared to the poll by the same firm last month. Plefsi Eleftherias (Course of Freedom) is down 0.8% points, and slightly ahead of main opposition PASOK, which gained 1.5% points.
In absolute terms, the ruling party is calculated at 30.2% in terms of voters’ intent, up from the percentage of votes it picked up in the last European Parliament election in 2024 (28.3%) and compared to last month’s Metron Analysis poll (27.3%), with analysts pointing to a decrease in public opinion scrutiny over the Tempi rail disaster.
The right-of-center and Euroskeptic Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) party shows a loss of nearly two percentage points, coming in at 8.6% from 10.4% last month.
One big “loser” in the latest Metron Analysis poll is a nascent right-wing party founded by MEP Aphrodite Latinopoulou, which fell from 3.1% last month to 1.8% in the latest poll, a figure that if repeated in a general election would fall far short of Parliament representation.
Meanwhile, a rebound by socialist/social democrat PASOK party in the results is not accompanied with a fillip for its leader, Nikos Androulakis, who remains in “single-digit” territory on the question of who is best-suited for prime minister – 5%.
Conversely, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis picks up a percentage point to reach 27%.
Nevertheless, Mitsotakis’ ND government receives negative ratings from 69% of respondents in the Metron Analysis poll, with positive responses remaining at 25%. The same negative numbers, roughly, were given by respondents vis-a-vis the opposition.
Second poll
The second survey was conducted by the Opinion Poll firm and commissioned by the Action 24 television station.
Center-right ND remains ahead of the seemingly anti-establishment Plefsi Eleftherias by 12 percentage points. Main opposition PASOK follows, along with a trio of lesser parties represented in Parliament, all above the 3% threshold of valid votes cast in a general election that’s required for entry into the legislature. The undecided vote is calculated at 16.3%.
Compared to the previous such poll by the same firm on May 5, ND is marginally up, 25.4%, compared to 25.2%; Plefsi is marginally down, 13.4% from 13.9%.
In an extrapolation of the vote, ND is calculated at 30.4%, up from 30% in the previous poll; Plefsi Eleftherias at 16% from 16.5%.
