Donald Trump’s close adviser and nominee as the next US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, was gushing in her praise of the country where she’ll, barring an unexpected turn of events, serve as America’s top diplomat in the coming period.
Guilfoyle responded to questions by Greek state broadcaster ERT on Friday, starting off with:
“I am honored to accept President Trump’s nomination as the next Ambassador to Greece, and I look forward to gaining the support of the US Senate.
“I am eager to collaborate with the Greek Government and will work diligently to ensure that the strong ties between Greece and the United States continue to deepen under President Trump’s leadership. As a valuable NATO ally Greece plays a significant role within the European Union and serves as a pillar of stability and security in the region. My appointment in Athens underscores President Trump’s appreciation for Greece and reflects the deep and dynamic relationship between our two nations.”
The very prominent but also controversial 55-year-old Guilfoyle, the erstwhile fiancée of Trump’s oldest son, Donald Jr., wrote that her mandate would focus on strong economic development, education, energy security, and collaboration in the defense sector.
Guilfoyle also appeared to “walk back” from past negative statements made during the height of the Greek bailout era, while she was a television pundit on Fox News, saying the country is posting one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe, with a society that showed resilience in the face of challenges.
She also thanked the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America, Elpidophoros, as well as billionaire Greek-American businessman John Catsimatidis, a Trump ally, whose name has been repeatedly thrown out as a possible Republican mayoral candidate for New York City. Finally, she expressed appreciation to outgoing US ambassador to Greece George Tsunis over what she called a smooth transition.
