US ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle made her first official visit to the Souda Bay naval facility on Tuesday, marking her inaugural visit to the nearby Cretan city Chania since presenting her credentials in the country.
Guilfoyle arrived in Chania by private aircraft at approximately 4 p.m., before heading directly to the naval anchorage as part of a scheduled official visit.
At the base, she met with military officials and received briefings on its operations.
Souda Bay is one of the more strategically significant facilities in the eastern Mediterranean, serving as a pillar of Greece–US defense cooperation and a forward operating post for NATO activities in the region.
The visit underscores the continued emphasis placed on bilateral defense ties, particularly in the context of evolving security dynamics in the eastern Mediterranean, where the base plays a central logistical and operational role for U.S. and allied forces.
Later in the evening, an official reception is scheduled in her honor, hosted by local officeholders and military officials.
